VOLUNTEER

Regional Selection Committees (RSC)

In order to facilitate the Alberta Heritage Tree Project, the Foundation requires volunteers to participate in the selection of nominated trees for Heritage recognition.

Tasks include:

  • Verification of nomination data
  • Assess nominations
  • Selection of nominations for Heritage recognition
  • Plaque placement (Spring/Summer 2007)

As a Member of the Heritage Tree Foundation of Canada, you are our representative in the community. Your knowledge and familiarity with the community are a source we cannot duplicate. Your participation enriches the Alberta Heritage Tree Project.

The Foundation will provide you with a Handbook, outlining a systematic approach to selecting trees for Heritage recognition in your community. The Foundation will work with you and the other members of the Regional Selection Committee to ensure the process is enjoyable as well as informative.

The value of trees is, they touch our souls and heal our hearts.

It is ever so subtle, yet powerful.

When we are touched by something, we develop a rapport based in gratitude.

We begin to awaken an understanding of our deep connection to the Earth.

Yes we read about what we are doing to our Earth and know it intellectually, but what we hear can easily be forgotten, what we see will be remembered and when we do something - like visit these wonderful treasures of our Natural Heritage - we begin to understand.

It is the understanding and remembering that strengthens this connection and touches our very souls. It is that which the Foundation hopes to be a part of inspiring.

Tree Story Researchers

The role of Researcher is to gather information and old photographs about selected trees. This will supplement the work the Regional Selection Committees are conducting. Information will be put into the Heritage Tree Registry; bringing trees and their stories to the attention of the Province as a whole.

This is a wonderful opportunity to use those investigative skills!! Ask questions do interviews. Dig into a community’s newspaper archives or local history books.

Talk to the Elders in a community. Do they have any tree stories? Perhaps they do, but can’t quite remember where the tree is - maybe it hasn’t been nominated yet.

The depth to which you go when gathering the history around a certain tree could be very extensive – when it is attached to people and their experiences the story could be long and rich. This is part of our heritage, a part of your Community, and a part of who we have come to be.

How you gather the info is up to you; notes, articles, tape recorder, or digital video camera. The mediums are entirely up to you and your creative expressions.
Lets help those stories to be remembered and honoured.
